~ Entirely unexpected was a visit to the Meru Hippo Pool. As I'd never heard of it, it was a pleasant surprise to step out of the safari van to walk down to the pool. A young British couple was there, observing hippo behavior throughout the day. They were staying in a tent for months, and rarely saw others. I admired their scientific outlook, good humor and dedication to wildlife observation. A baby hippo was supported by adults on the water surface. Filtered midday light coming through foliage caused sharply etched shadows on the hippos. Altogether a delightful experience — highly recommended!
