~ Both around the grounds of the Samburu Sopa Lodge and throughout Samburu National Reserve there are large numbers of Xerus rutilis, Unstriped Ground Squirrel, running from one hiding place to another. This particular ground squirrel was the rare exception, remaining in one place long enough to facilitate portrait photos. We observed it for more than one minute, during which it never changed position. Ground squirrels add liveliness to otherwise static landscapes, as they typically are observed in motion, thereby avoiding the numerous predators in the area.
