~ On my 62nd birthday my long-time friend QIU Wenhui met me for lunch. I hadn't seen him for over two years, while he earned a masters degree in the United States, so the reunion was especially meaningful. He invited me to be his guest at Bleu Marine, my old favorite and a Beijing establishment at which I've been a guest since 1999. He presented gifts from his recent visit to Istanbul, Turkey, as well as semi-precious beach stones from his life in Oregon. He also gave me Donna Leon's most recent novel. We enjoyed rosé wine with soup and entrees of salmon and duck breast.
