~ Without far more extensive background understanding, elementary avian behavior baffles. While on safari I have very limited interest in identifying bird species, feeling that there will be uninterrupted months in Beijing for doing so. Rather, my primary interest is in behavior, with an instinctive rejection of facile explanations predicated on anthropomorphic assumptions. Hence when one of these two Tockus erythrorhynchus, Red-billed Hornbill, toyed with a bark chip, I was grateful that Anthony and Ni refrained from conventional explanations for the behavior.
