~ Tong and I had packed up and were starting to leave…we once again saw this large Nephila sp. in its web, which had caught our attention earlier in the afternoon…it occurred to me that although the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super telephoto lens was temporarily unable to use Automatic Focus (a problem since resolved), if I were to try to manually focus, I might obain a portait of this striking spider…as i Ws hot and dripping wet from rain and perspiration, it was awkward to remount the large lens, then to attempt to see the spider clearly enough to sharply focus, which was affected by the shady light under tall trees and by the necessity to stand about 4 meters away in order to have adequate focal distance…I intentionally shot dark, intending to later brighten the image…these two Nephila sp. portraits are the result, and are the final wildlife mages taken during the Summer, 2012 visit to Hong Kong and Macau
